THE MARVELS OF MACACAUBA

From its interlocked grain and Striking Red Hue,  Macacauba wood has long been sought after for its beauty and versatility. Often referred to as mac wood or simply Macacauba, wood has rapidly gained a reputation among those seeking a special type of wood for their project needs. 

From originating from the Brazilian Amazon Region in Central and South America, Macacauba wood (Platymiscium spp.)is well known for being strong and durable. Macacauba wood has about 2700 lbf of Janka Hardness and tree size of about 2-3 ft.

 

Different Forms of Macacauba 

Macacauba wood has been known by many names, Once it is used or sold- out as Lumber, it was called Macacauba or Macawood.

     

In the case of Turning and Building for  Musical instruments, the name Hormigo is more employed. 

Hormigo Negro is used to denoting darker species and Hormigo Rojo is used to denote orangish-red species.


Unknown Specialities of Macacauba wood

Macacauba became popular when it was used as a replacement option for Brazilian Rosewood 25 years ago as an export ban was used on this wood. Because Macacauba wood has similar characteristics to Brazilian Rosewood, So it was a perfect replacement.

There are no health issues reported while working with this wood, such as reactions to wood dust, etc. 

Apart from one Costa Rican species of Macacauba wood, it is not listed in the IUCN Red List of vulnerable species. 


Identification of Macacauba wood

The Heartwood of the Macacauba tree can be highly variable from bright red to darker reddish or purplish brown in color, with darker stripes. 

The wood grain is straight to slightly interlocked, with a fine to medium texture, this fine texture makes Macacauba wood easier to work but while handling it with interlocked grains it seems a little difficult. 

There will be no odor while working with Macacauba.

 

Common Uses of Macacauba wood

Macacauba wood has unique aesthetic qualities, that's why it is most used by Luthiers and Furniture Builders. 

Due to its strength and ability Macacauba wood is also commonly used for Cabinetry, veneer, and turned objects.

Apart from using for wooden projects, Macacauba wood species fix Nitrogen in soil for Agroforestry purposes.
